Tips for Lawn Care and Landscaping

Good lawns are very ideal for every modern home. Good lawns are a difficult task not only to grow but also to maintain. Water is very important in the growth and the overall life of the lawn. The quantity of water to be used on the lawn is directly related to the weather season and the grass type planted. There are the commonly used types of grasses on lawns and they include St. Augustine, Bermuda and Buffalo.

These types of grasses require less watering as compared to the Kentucky blue grass which requires frequent watering. The weather season might also determine the amount of water used on the lawn. The lawn is mostly dry if not watered well because of the high rate of evaporation during the summer season. In short this means that in the summer seasons, one should ensure that the ground is well watered to avoid drying up.

The winter season on the other hand allows the ground or the lawn to maintain its moisture. The moisture on the ground during the winter season is basically due to the low rate of evaporation. Fertilizing the lawn is also another important way of caring and maintaining the grass. The type of grass planted and the weather season also influence the time to fertilize the lawn. The Bermuda and the buffalo are mostly fertilized during summer because they are considered as the warm season grasses.

Some of the grasses which are referred to as the cold season grasses like the Kentucky blue grass are fertilized during the winter season. Fertilizers contain essential additives and nutrients for the plants and they include potassium, phosphorous and nitrogen. An alternative of buying fertilizers is making your own from the mixture of coffee grounds, bone meal and wood ashes. The other type of fertilizer can be made from Epsom salts, ammonia, mouthwash and beer.

Weeding is another important method of lawn care. The grass should be allowed to grow more than three inches from the ground thus minimizing the presence of weeds in the lawn. Weeding can also be done by the use of vinegar which is strong and does not affect the grass in any way. Pulling the weed out, laying mulch to prevent growth and applying herbicides are other effective methods of eliminating weeds in the lawn. By using pesticides on the lawns you can also get rid of various pests and insects. Some of the mostly found pests in the lawn include insects, snails and slugs. Instead of using money buying pesticides, you can save it by regularly cleaning the lawns. Mowing is also another effective way of taking care of the lawn because it allows the grass to grow thick.
